Classroom News:

Reading - We continue to read Lewis and Clark, In their Own Words. The students are learning about this very exciting time in American History.  They also learned about the Louisiana Purchase.  Have them sing the song, What a Bargain, What a Bargain to you.

Math - We will start working on subtraction this week.  We will review simple subtraction facts and move into harder problems with borrowing.

Science - We are going to incorporate the Lewis and Clark unit into Science by classifying plants and animals like Lewis and Clark did while on their journey. A note from Mrs. Barber: The kids and I have discussed their first Science test. I saw some absolutely fabulous written responses, written as a scientist would write them. :) I think some kids are a little shocked! A part of this journey is to learn how to take a test. In our review we discussed the difference between a multiple choice and a written response and practiced both types of questions. It was a very interesting discussion. Some kids said they didn't study, some lost their study sheets and took responsibility for a lack of study, some thought it was exactly what we had done in class. I asked if they felt they had the materials they needed to be successful. They said they did. So, we know that studying along the way, practicing these types of questions and realizing that when we practice something in class we have a reason for it.  All  of theses add to  our success.  Please realize that this is one facet of their grades. Tests are an important part of our transition from second to third grade.

Language - We are talking about the parts of a sentence.  The students should be able to tell you how a sentence needs both a subject and a predicate.

*What if the Secret to Success Is Failure? is an article published in The New York Times  a couple of weeks ago. Liz had the link in her blog last week but we thought it was worth mentioning.  http://nyti.ms/nLBqp4
*Students received their mid term library grade last week.  They know what to do to get either an S or an O.
*We had a lot of fun with our buddies today.  We will post some pictures from this exciting day in another blog.  There are so many pictures that it would make this blog too long if we added them here.  We want you to pay attention to this blog but also enjoy the pictures.
