Monday - Thursday: Read for 15 - 20 minutes

Homework Challenge will be sent home on Wednesday to be completed by Friday, August 30.



Important information:

* Summer reading - we understand that this is first year that there is required reading for third graders.  We do not give a grade for summer reading.  By Wednesday, we would like your child to made a list of all the books he/she read throughout the summer.  We realize your child may not remember every book so we ask they do their best in listing the books.

* Please return the Tell Me About Your Child by Wednesday, August 21.  This information helps us know your child better.

* Each night your third grade will bring home his/her planner (assignment book).  Please go over it with your child and sign it after you know they did their homework.  It is a good organizational tool which will help them prepare for the day. They are allowed to add personal information like piano or soccer.  Hopefully, this will  help them to remember to put their piano books in their backpack.

* We are changing our spelling program this year to Wordly Wise.  This is a vocabulary curriculum that helps build vocabulary skills.  One week we will work on Wordly Wise and the next week will we use the same words as our spelling list.  We will take a break every once in a while and do a thematic spelling list.

Reading -  This week Nora Pink, Reading Specialist, will assess each student's reading.  We will start our first novel this week.  The two novels are The Hundred Dresses and Chalk Box Kid.  Both of these books have friendship as the main theme and seeing the gifts of every student.  We will focus on comprehension, vocabulary, and making connections to the lifeskills.

Math - Our first unit is on place value.  We will focus on numbers up to 999,999.  Our math vocabulary words this week are: standard form, word form, expanded form, digits, and place value.

Science - We are talking about scientific method and will apply it to some simple experiments. 

Language - We are working on bio poems this week with a self portrait. We will also begin working on the four types of sentences: statements, question, exclamations, commands. We will expect third graders to write complete sentences with a capital letter and correct punctuation.
