Class News:

Wordly Wise -  The third grade spelling program this year is a vocabulary based program.  We will work on each set of words for two weeks.  The first week we will work on meaning and applications of the words, culminating in the reading of a passage containing the words and answering questions on the passage.  The second week we will concentrate on memorizing the spelling of the words with a spelling test on that Friday.  We began the first lesson today, Monday, August 26.  The students will write the words in their planners, too.  We will also include the words on blog each week.  Finally, on the second week we will put the words on Spelling City so the students can practice online if this works for them.  We will include the link and other necessary information on the blog.

Reading - This week we will start our first two novels.  The students will be divided  into two groups to read either The Whipping Boy or The Hundred Dresses.  Each book has a theme of friendship and being kind to others.  We will work on summarizing, vocabulary,  and fluency.

Math - This week we continue to work on place value.  We will focus on finding numbers on a number line using patterns.  We will also work on solving problems by writing an organized list.  You will see a Spiral Review come home one or two times a week.  These are review worksheets that reinforce previously taught skills.  As I told the students,"I hope they are easy because it means you remember what you learned." Ms. Beilharz will also use these to plan reteaching when necessary.

Science- This week we are beginning a Unit on Plants and How They Grow. In conjunction with this unit we will be planting seeds in the St. Paul's Community Garden, and we will be responsible for the assigned plots. We are excited to have this opportunity and intend to share the vegetables that grow with St. Paul's Church Food Pantry.
We plan to start this week, probably Wednesday,  so if you want your child to wear gloves and/or sunscreen, please apply the sunscreen in the morning and send the gloves with your child. We will send a Sign Up Genius home soon for help with watering!

Language Arts - We continue to work on sentences including subject and predicate.

Other important information:

Eucharist Chapel - Your student brought home a letter from Stan Runnels, rector of St. Paul's, about the celebration of Holy Eucharist for 3-8 graders.  Please read this and discuss the options before the first Holy Eucharist on Friday, August 30.
