Class News:

Language Arts, Reading, Social Studies:

In each of these subjects students will be studying the rainforest, the animals and the layers of the rainforest. We continue to research our animals.  Third graders are working hard on finding interesting information about their animals. They have now gathered information on the size and appearance of their animal and its habitat. This week we will study the behavior of each rainforest animal.  We started typing our papers in computer lab last week, and will continue with that this week. Students will also continue to work on their layers of the rainforest paper this week. One ongoing assignment in this rainforest unit is independent reading of books about the rainforest and the recording of facts from these books. This is an important component of the unit and one in which we differentiate instruction. 
This week's spelling words are rainforest words and as there is no Wordly Wise test, please note the spelling test is on this coming Friday, February 5.
We continue with the grammar program, singing jingles and classifying/diagramming sentences.This week students will be introduced to conjunctions and their role in sentences.


Math - 
On Tuesday we will be finishing up our Division Unit with our final Division Test.  At the end of this paragraph you will find the review information for the test.  I encourage students to come in on Tuesday morning to review for the test.  On Wednesday we will begin our unit on time.  Over the next 3 weeks, students will review the concept of time to the quarter hours, time to the minute, elapsed time, and also other units of time such as roman numerals, days/weeks/months, and working backward in time.

Division Review for test Tuesday, February 2, 2016

Students should be able to:

·         Draw a picture to solve a division equation then write a division equation to go with picture. (pgs 182-183 in math book)

For example, 15 bananas, 3 boxes—Draw picture then write 15 ÷ 3 = 5

·         Write a multiplication equation to go with a division equation. 

For example 18 ÷ 3 = 6         6 x 3 = 18 (pgs 192-193)

·         Find the quotient to a division equation using the repeated subtraction method. (Top of pg. 175)

·         Decide if two sides of an equation are equal. (pgs 201, 204, 207)

For example, 30 ÷ 10        4 x 2

·         Label the quotient, divisor, dividend in a division equation. (pg 193)

·         Be able to complete division equations without using a multiplication chart.  Students WILL be able to draw pictures of use chips to solve problems.

Science -This week we continue studying food chains, how living things compete, and how environments change. Students will research some food chains in the rainforest and each student will write about and illustrate the food chains they choose.

Important Rainforest Dates:
Wednesday, February 10 Rainforest Addresses -  Please send addresses of the people you would like to invite to the Rainforest Open House on Tuesday, March 1.We will be addressing invitations on Thursday & Friday of that week.  It helps if you send the addresses electronically so the students can easily read the addresses.

Valentine's Day -  Each student should bring cards either for everyone in her/his class or for everyone in 3rd grade. Please have your students put names on the envelopes to ensure everyone is included. Students can bring a decorated box for Valentines from home or a brown paper grocery bag. We will not have time to make boxes as we are fully occupied with our rainforest studies.

The annual Pancake Breakfast will be held February 9 in the North MPR from 7:00 - 8:30 a.m.  This breakfast, sponsored by the 8th grade, serves as a fundraiser for the school and culminates in a class gift presentation during the graduation ceremony in May.
