Class Notes:
Reading - We will finish our unit on Lewis and Clark this week and begin Westward Expansion. Students will take a test over Lewis & Clark in class. The students do not need to study for this because they will be able to use the novels and any notes.
Math - We will start our unit on money. This can be a very difficult skill for some students so we encourage students to practice at home. They can count the money in your wallet or in the their piggy bank. We will also talk about bartering and how this was used during Westward Expansion. During our money unit the students will have an extra enrichment opportunity. They are challenged to find all 293 ways to make a dollar using only coins.
Science - We are learning along with Mr. Bones! Mrs. Barber will be sending home an extra copy for the kids to keep at home. We are counting the bones in class now. Mrs. Barber has suggested to the kids that they concentrate on learning one set of bones, such as the arm bones, at a time. As they do an activity they should think about what bones in the arm they are using! It's easier to learn a small group at a time. Thanks for helping your child learn the names of their bones.
Language - This week we will be working on writing non-fiction paragraphs. Each paragraph should consist of a topic sentence, concluding sentence, and several well written supporting sentences. We will be using our knowledge of Lewis and Clark to write these paragraphs.
Other important information:
*Our first field trip will be Friday. We will be going to Mahaffie Farm in Olathe. Students need to bring a completely disposable lunch. Please let us know no later than noon on Tuesday if you need to order a sack lunch from school. They also need to dress for the weather. We will be outside in sun or rain. Please make sure they wear study shoes such as sneakers or boots. Also, we expect their best behavior!
* On Wednesday the faculty and staff is celebrating Lee Denim Day. We will be wearing jeans and a pink shirt in awareness of breast cancer. During lunch 3-8th grades are allowed to buy two pink cookies for $1 to support breast cancer research. This is completely optional.
* On Tuesday & Wednesday, October 25 & 26 the Lower School students are welcome to bring in an uncarved but decorated pumpkin. The pumpkin can be painted, have a costume, decorated with yarn or markers, or other creative ideas. We would like to keep these on display during parent/teacher conferences so we are asking that pumpkins not be carved. The pumpkins aren't judged but just fill our commons with happiness.
*A huge thank you to Mr. Frank Blanc and Mr. Paul Trainor for reading to Ms. Beilharz's class last week.
Revisiting Curriculum Night:
*We work very hard with students on taking personal responsibility for age appropriate tasks. Some of these tasks are: being prepared for science & math, returning homework, signing up for lunch, having planners signed by parents, and the list goes on and on. We appreciate your support in working with us as students become more independent.
