Summer Reading - A message from the fourth grade teachers!
Dear Third Grade Parents,
We have been hard at work finding a novel that we believe your child will enjoy reading this summer that will coordinate with our beginning of the year plans. We have decided to ask incoming 4th graders to read The Fabled Fourth Graders of Aesop Elementary School by Candace Fleming.
We have included the link to this book on Amazon below. You should not have too much trouble locating this book online to purchase, or at a local library.
We also ask that if students do purchase a copy to keep that they bring it in on the first day of school to use with some in class activities and lessons.
Have a safe and happy summer vacation!
Mrs. Van Maren and Mrs. Cowan
All about third grade
*Westward Expansion - Students study Lewis & Clark, The Oregon Trail, and The Pony Express. We celebrate with Oregon Trail Days where the students dress as pioneers and complete pioneer activities. We finish with a pioneer lunch!
*The Rainforest - Each student becomes an expert on a chosen animal. Some of the things the unit covers: writing a research report, graphing, a poetry unit, and a big celebration.
*Math - Some of the third grade objectives: place value, multiplication, division, fractions, etc. We use a lot of hands-on manipulatives and the laptops. Morning Math Session in on Thursdays mornings when we come together and have fun.
* Science - The main units we study are: planets, plants, human body, simple machines, hearing and scientific methods. We love to do experiments!
* Reading - Some of the novels we read: Charlotte's Web, 100 Dresses, Lewis & Clark, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. We work on comprehension, vocabulary, inferring, and other important reading skills.
*Language - We study all parts of speech throughout third grade. We complete writing assignments on: explanatory writing, poetry, historical fiction, research report, personal narrative, comparing and contrasting, and many many more.
*Handwriting - We learn cursive in third grade!!!
St. Paul's third graders love; being the older buddy to a toddler, salad bar at lunch, not having quiet time at lunch, planners, and much much more!
