Classroom news:

Reading - We will start reading Lewis & Clark: In their own Words this week.  This is a non-fiction novel that tells the story of Lewis & Clark.  We will discuss time lines, secondary & primary sources, vocabulary, and spelling issues that Lewis & Clark had.  During this time third graders have a choice to expand their knowledge of this time of history with some independent studies.

Math - We continue to work on number sense this week.  We will focus on numbers up to 999,999.  Third graders have been practicing saying big numbers without using the word "and".  It can be difficult to say larger numbers and not say and in the middle.  We also continue writing numbers in expanded form, word form, and standard form.

Science - We continue to work on plants this week.  We will incorporate our Lewis and Clark study into our plant unit since they wrote a lot about plants and animals in their journals.  Friday we will plant some vegetables in the church's community garden.  Father Stan has provided us some seeds to plant.  Any produce we grow will be donated to the food pantry.  Please wear gardening appropriate clothes on Friday.  Also, Monday we discussed Neil Armstrong and his importance to the US space program.  We had a great discussion about this incredible American.

Pink slips and green slips - we are so impressed that we have had to hand out very few pink slips for homework.  A pink slip is given when a third grader doesn't turn in his/her homework.  The third graders are doing a wonderful job of turning in homework.  Thank you to all the parents who are signing the green slips and helping us with talking.  We have noticed that the students are controlling their talking and we are handing out fewer slips most days.  We appreciate you talking with your child and perhaps providing consequences.  Thank you for your help and support.  It helps make our jobs easier!!
