Special Events-
Musical offerings in divisional chapel. For the next three weeks we encourage third graders to provide a musical offering in chapel. In the past, students have played the piano, violin, guitar or song a solo or a duet. Your child needs to tell Mrs. Jones what day he/she would like to perform. We encourage you to come to chapel the day your child performs. Chapel starts at 8:25.
Family Christmas Ornament- Each child in grades 3-5 is encouraged to bring in a family Christmas ornament. We will hang the ornaments on the tree in the second floor commons. Each child who brings an ornament will place it on the tree and make a Christmas wish. Then he/she will take a candy cane from the tree.
Read for 2014 On Friday, December 6 the students in grades 3-5 will read for 2014 seconds which comes to approximately 33 minutes. Students are encouraged to bring a book that they can read for that long and a pillow or a stuffed animal to relax. After we read we will enjoy hot cocoa and a cookie.
Christmas Program - Students need to be at the church at 6:40. Students will meet classroom teachers in the undercroft of the church and come dressed in nice Christmas colored, church-type clothing:
Jewel-toned colors= green, red, blue, purple, etc.
– even black or white is fine.
Girls – dresses, skirts and tops, or a nice pants outfit
Boys – slacks and a nice shirt and/or sweater
(no jeans or sweats, please)
Nutcracker - We will leave school at 9:45 and return by 1:00. Students either need to order a sack lunch from school or bring a cold lunch. The lunchroom will be closed by the time we return so hot lunch isn't an option. Please have your child dress nicely for the show. We ask that students do not wear sweats or a jersey top, but a pair of jeans with a collared shirt is fine.
Secret Santa - From Tuesday, December 17 - Thursday, December 19 the third grades will participate in s secret Santa within the two classes. Boys will have boys and girls will have girls. We ask that you do not spend more than $5.00 total for the entire three days. We will pick names on Wednesday, December 11.
Ice Skating and Christmas Party - On Friday, December 20 grades 3-5 will go ice skating at Line Creek in the morning. We will have our Christmas party in the afternoon. More information to follow.
Class News:
Reading - We will begin reading The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. This humorous tale involves the Herdman children and how they learn about the story of Christmas. We will work on vocabulary, character development, and comprehension.
Math - this week we will continue to work on the concept of division. We will write division Christmas stories in class. Due to the Christmas program and Read for 2014 we will not have a math facts test on Friday. However, we encourage students to practice studying their math facts. If they have passed 0-5 facts then they need to start working on 6,7,8, & 9 facts. We are learning songs and a couple of tricks to help us memorize these important facts. Thanks for your help!
Science - We continue with the human body; bones, joints, muscles, There will be a test on the bones on Friday, December 13. The students have a skeleton picture with the named bones (just 25 of them!) for review. The test will be that same skeleton without the names of the bones. The students will also have a list of the 25 bones in front of them during the test and will assign them to the right places!
Social Studies - Over the next three weeks we will be working on studying Christmas customs around the world. Almost all of the work will be done at school. We encourage students to bring customs from their culture to share with the class.
