Special Events-

Musical offerings in divisional chapel.  This week and next we encourage third graders to provide a musical offering in chapel.  In the past, students have played the piano, violin, guitar or song a solo or a duet.  Your child needs to tell Mrs. Jones what day he/she would like to perform.  We encourage you to come to chapel the day your child performs.  Chapel starts at 8:25. We have already enjoyed lots of beautiful performances.

Family Christmas Ornament- Each child in grades 3-5 is encouraged to bring in a family Christmas ornament.  We will hang the ornaments on the tree in the second floor commons.  Each child who brings an ornament will place it on the tree and make a Christmas wish.  Then he/she will take a candy cane from the tree.

Nutcracker - We will leave school at 9:45 and return by 1:00.  Students need to bring a cold lunch unless he/she has ordered a school sack lunch.  The lunchroom will be closed by the time we return so hot lunch isn't an option.  Please have your child dress nicely for the show. We ask that students do not wear sweats or a jersey top, but a pair of jeans with a collared shirt is fine.

Secret Santa - From Tuesday, December 17 - Thursday, December 19 the third grades will participate in s secret Santa within the two classes.  Boys will have boys and girls will have girls.  We ask that you do not spend more than $5.00 total for the entire three days.  We will pick names on Wednesday, December 11.

Ice Skating and Christmas Party - On Friday, December 20 grades 3-5 will go ice skating at Line Creek in the morning.  We will have our Christmas party in the afternoon.  More information to follow.

Lower School Service Project
Beginning Monday, December 9 and going through Monday, December 16 Lower School students may bring in small, stocking stuffer items to place under the Christmas trees in the first and second floor commons. On December 17 these items will be taken to Parish Hall so that families who receive assistance from the St. Paul's food pantry will be able to pick up a few items to give their children Christmas morning. We know that many families contributed to the St. Paul's food drive just a few weeks ago and that, in general, this is a time when lots of organizations are asking for donations so please know there is no expectation for participation. However, we did want to provide this opportunity in case families were interested in giving to a great cause. Please see the flyer for more information.

Recess
During the winters months we try and go outside as often as possible.  Please send your child with appropriate gear for a cold recess.  However, if the temperature is under 20 degrees then we will stay inside.  This is the school policy.  If it snows and the weather is above 20 degrees then we will try to go outside for a bit.  Please have your child bring/wear snow boots or bring an extra pair of shoes.

Class News:

Reading - We continue reading The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.  This humorous tale involves the Herdman children and how they learn about the story of Christmas.  We will work on vocabulary, character development, and comprehension.

Math -This week in math we will continue working on division.  The focus will be division with remainders and word problems using division.  Please continue to have your child study multiplication facts.

Science - We continue with the human body; bones, joints, muscles. There will be a test on the bones on Friday, December 13. The students have a skeleton picture with the named bones (just 25 of them!) for review. The test will be that same skeleton without the names of the bones. The students will also have a word bank with all the names of the bones during the test and so just have to assign them to the right places! I gave the students a practice test to bring home on Friday.

Social Studies - Over the next two weeks we will be working on studying Christmas customs around the world. Almost all of the work will be done at school. We encourage students to bring customs from their culture to share with the class.
