Class News:

Reading - This week we will begin reading George's Marvelous Medicine by Roald Dahl.  We will work on vocabulary, fluency, inferring, and some critical thinking.



Wordly Wise - This week and next we will complete lesson 11, then we will start completing Wordly Wise on a weekly basis.  This means that there will be a spelling test over the ten words each Friday from April 4th onwards, except for the week beginning April 14.  The students will complete most of the assignments at school but any unfinished parts will be homework.

Language - We will finish up our unit on verbs this week.  Our next writing project will be explanatory writing.  This is a piece of writing when the students explain how to do something.  We will complete the writing project at school but we are asking all third graders to give a speech and a demonstration of what their paper is explaining.  For example, how to wrap a present, how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, how to make an origami bird, etc.  We are asking you to talk with your child about a topic he/she could write about and then give a speech.  The speech will only be 1-2 minutes long.  We will start writing the paper this week.

Science- We will begin the chapter "Patterns in the Sky" from the Science textbook this week, before we move on to our Solar System  unit.We will learn what causes day, night, shadows, and seasons, as well as why the Moon's shape seems to change.

Math - We will begin our unit on two-dimensional shapes this week.  There are over 30 vocabulary words in this unit so we will focus on a few each week.  Some weeks the students will be responsible for studying  7-10 words and taking a short quiz on them. They will need to be able to identify the examples and definitions but they are not responsible for the spelling. This week's words: point,line,line segment, parallel lines, intersecting lines, perpendicular lines, ray.

A huge thank you to Allen Rostrom, Mary Wetzel, and Robin Henshaw for taking down the rainforest.  We couldn't do these big units without supportive parents.

Community Events:

Technology and Your Child

·        ECC-3^rd grade parents, Tuesday, April 22^nd, 6:30 PM

·        4^th – 8^th grade parents, Tuesday, May 6^th, 6:30 PM.  

During these events Drs. Kevin and Natasha Burgert will address the challenges of parenting in the online space.  They will describe sites commonly used by our children, discuss health consequences that arise from unrestricted or unmonitored internet use and finally, suggest practical ways to guide and monitor your child's online life. 

This presentation was so successful at one of our other independent Kansas City schools that we wanted to make sure it was available for our parents.  Please mark your calendar for one or both of these dates and plan to attend.  It’s important for you and your child.

Sun Safety and Healthy Nutrition – Re-Scheduled for Monday, April 28th, 4:30 PM

St. Paul’s ECC parent and pediatric dermatologist, Amy Nopper, will provide helpful information about how we can protect our children from the damaging effects of the sun and still be able to enjoy outdoor activities.

Protective and attractive hats with the St. Paul’s logo will be on display for purchase.

Margo Humenczuk, a pediatric nutritionist, from Children’s Mercy Hospital will also be here to share nutrition information and resources to help our students develop lifelong healthy eating habits.
