Class News:
Reading - This week we will continue reading George's Marvelous Medicine by Roald Dahl. We will work on vocabulary, fluency, inferring, comprehension, and some critical thinking.
Wordly Wise - This week we will complete lesson 11, then we will start completing Wordly Wise on a weekly basis. This means that there will be a spelling test over the ten words each Friday from April 4th onwards, except for the week beginning April 14. The students will complete most of the assignments at school but any incomplete assignments will be homework.
Language - Our next writing project will be explanatory writing. This is a piece of writing when the students explain how to do something. We will complete the writing project at school but we are asking all third graders to give a speech and a demonstration of what their paper is explaining. For example, how to wrap a present, how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, how to make an origami bird, etc. We are asking you to talk with your child about a topic he/she could write about and then give a speech. The speech will only be 1-2 minutes long. We will start writing the paper this week.
Science- We will finish the chapter "Patterns in the Sky" from the Science textbook this week, before we move on to our Solar System unit. We are learning what causes day, night, shadows, and seasons, as well as why the Moon's shape seems to change.
Math - We continue working on geometry. This week our focus is angles and triangles. We will also focus on quadrilaterals. The quiz will be on Friday and it will be over angles and triangles. We will do most of the studying in class but 5 or 10 minutes a night is always helpful. Geometry words: vertex, ray (review), right angle, obtuse angle, acute angle, right triangle, equilateral triangle, isosceles triangle, scalene triangle, obtuse triangle, acute triangle. (Some triangles can be more than one triangle.)The students will not need to know the definition but just label the triangle correctly. However, a vocab. sheet is being sent home with examples of each word. It may be easier to memorize the vocab. to differentiate the different types of triangles.
Social Studies- Students will begin studying the three branches of government.

Standardized Testing
Students in third through seventh grade will take standardized tests Monday, April 14th through Thursday, April 17th. We ask parents to help students get a good night's rest, a hearty and healthy breakfast, and to arrive at school on time each morning since testing will begin right after chapel. Students will take two subtests each morning with a short break in between. Students are encouraged to bring a healthy snack to eat in between subtests. This year students will be taking the CTP4 test. This standardized test was developed by ERB and was created for private schools. After realizing that the Standford Achievement Tests which we have used in years past had dated private school norms and no intention of updating them it was decided that we change tests. In addition to being a more challenging test, the CTP4 will also be timed and will offer two new subtests, Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning, that students have not taken before. Students will be taking a practice test the week of April 7th so they will have some familiarity with the process and format.
