Class News:
Reading - We will begin reading Third Grade Angels and The Hundred Dresses.  Each student will be assigned to a group to read one of these novels.  We read in a variety of ways: small group, large group, individual, and in pairs.  During these novels we will focus on reading fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary.

Language Arts:
Grammar. Please ask your student to sing some of the jingles we are learning: sentence, noun, verb. They are learning them quickly. We will also learn about sentences/sentence fragments, and the four different types of sentences, interrogative, imperative, declarative, and exclamatory.
You will have an opportunity to look at the students' first piece of writing at Curriculum Night, a bio poem.

Math - This week we will continue to focus on numeration.  We will plot numbers on a number line, compare numbers, and order number from greatest to least and least to greatest.  We will also work on solving word problems by making a table or drawing a picture or diagram.

Science - This week students will conduct experiments using the Scientific Method. They will also write notes about their experiments in their science spirals. We will then move on to our Plant Unit.

Curriculum Night - We look forward to sharing the third grade curriculum and other valuable information on Thursday night. There will be an opportunity to ask general questions about third grade. There is childcare provided.

Screening Information from the Children’s Spot!

Speech /language/hearing screenings will be offered on September 8th and 9th for children in Toddler thru 3rd grades.  A permission form will be available on our website  for you to print, complete, and return with payment by August 29th.  Older children may be screened if you have concerns. Please contact Celeste Haas, speech pathologist if you have questions at 816-932-6924 or chaas2@saint-lukes.org .

Fine and Gross motor screenings will be offered on September 10th and 11th for children  in Toddler through 5th grade.  These screenings are provided by referral only.   So if you receive a special permission form in your child’s backpack, this suggests that their teacher may have a concern and is requesting a screening.  You should complete and return the form to your teacher with payment.    You may also contact Teri Tankel, occupational therapist if you have questions at 816-932-6927 or ttankel@saint-lukes.org .

Please remember that these are screenings only and will provide helpful information about your child’s development.  Depending on the results of the screenings, there may be no recommendations at all OR there may be recommendations for additional testing, re-screening at a later date, or home practice suggestions.
