Class News:
Reading - We continue to read The Hundred Dresses and Third Grade Angels. Both of these books have a theme of being kind to one another and are mostly set in schools. There are many life lessons in these two books which is why we read them at the beginning of the year.
Language Arts - We will begin writing personal narratives this week, and continue with learning the grammar jingles including the adjective jingle this week.
Math - This week it is all about rounding numbers. We will round numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1000. We will also round 3 and 4 digit numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. We continue to work on strategies to solve word problems and this week we will focus on drawing a picture or a diagram. Please refer to the green letter that came home last week and help your child practice his/her addition or subtraction basic facts each night.
Science -This week we are gardening and continuing our Plant Unit. We will learn why plants need leaves, why plants need roots and stems, and how plants are grouped.
Installation Service for Mr. Myler - The service on Tuesday evening is for adults and there will be a child friendly service on Friday during All School Chapel. Parents are welcome to come to one or both.
Currciulum Night Thank you to all the parents who came to Curriculum Night. If you didn't make it, a packet was sent home on Friday in your child's backpack. If it isn't there then let us know and we will send another one home.

Screening Information from the Children’s Spot!
Speech /language/hearing screenings will be offered on September 8th and 9th for children in Toddler thru 3rd grades. A permission form will be available on our website for you to print, complete, and return with payment by August 29th. Older children may be screened if you have concerns. Please contact Celeste Haas, speech pathologist if you have questions at 816-932-6924 or chaas2@saint-lukes.org .
Fine and Gross motor screenings will be offered on September 10th and 11th for children in Toddler through 5th grade. These screenings are provided by referral only. So if you receive a special permission form in your child’s backpack, this suggests that their teacher may have a concern and is requesting a screening. You should complete and return the form to your teacher with payment. You may also contact Teri Tankel, occupational therapist if you have questions at 816-932-6927 or ttankel@saint-lukes.org .
Please remember that these are screenings only and will provide helpful information about your child’s development. Depending on the results of the screenings, there may be no recommendations at all OR there may be recommendations for additional testing, re-screening at a later date, or home practice suggestions.
