Class News:
Reading - We will finish up reading African American biographies Monday or Tuesday. Then we will begin reading nonfiction books about the rainforest.
Math - We will continue to work on division this week. We are working on understanding the basic concept along with using correct division terms such as dividend, divisor, quotient. Third graders took their first multiplication fact test last Friday and we will continue to do this each Friday. Some students will move on to study 0-10 facts while others will continue working on 0-5 facts. Last Friday's test will come home on Monday with what your child needs to study this week. Please let Ms. Beilharz know if you have any questions or concerns.
Science - We will continue looking at different ecosysytems in preparation for the rainforest studies.
Language - We are working on verbs, combining sentences, helping verbs, and linking verbs.
In Grammar we are classifying/diagramming increasingly complex sentences, and students will be working more independently on this.

Rainforest News - Your child will write down three animals he/she would like to study during our rainforest unit. Your child will find out his/her rainforest animal on Friday. Over the weekend we need you and your child to find 3 or 4 child friendly Internet resources by Tuesday, January 20. Please print out the resources and have your child bring them to school on Tuesday so we can begin our research. . Please make sure that your child is able to read the resources. There are several child friendly rainforest websites listed on the right hand side of the blog that you might use.
Third Quarter Responsibilities - As third graders move through the year we expect more and more from them each quarter. This quarter we are going to focus on completing and turning in work in a timely manner. If an assignment isn't finished then the students will have one or maybe two reminders then they will be responsible for turning in assignments on their own. We will encourage them to write down the assignment in their planners so you can also help encourage completion of the assignment. After a couple of reminders the students will receive a 0 in the grade book until the assignment is completed and turned into the teacher. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
Here is an interesting article about the importance of reading aloud to your children. In third grade we spend a little time each day reading to the students. We also allow students to read from a book of their choice each day.
