Class News:

Reading - This week students will finish reading Third Grade Angels by Jerry Spinelli and The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes. We continue to work on comprehension and vocabulary activities with both books. As students will finish reading The Hundred Dresses early in the week, they will work on individual projects. Each student will select one of the four projects suggested. Students reading Third Grade Angels will also have the opportunity to complete a concluding project.

Language Arts - We continue to work on sentences, subjects and predicates, and also combining sentences. Students will begin writing personal narratives.  In grammar we are working on memorization of five jingles, the sentence, the noun, the verb, the adverb, and the adjective.Students are also learning how to classify/diagram sentences.

Math - This week we are working on rounding.  Students will work on rounding to the nearest 10, 100, and 1,000.  We will round 3 and 4 digit numbers.  I have added new websites for this week's math practice.  There are also two sites that give worksheets if you or your child would like to work on that instead of an online game.

Science - We continue with our plant unit this week, looking at how plants are grouped and how new plants grow.  Weather permitting we should be able to do a little more gardening. The arugula is already through the soil and growing! We will plant some chrysanthemum plants. Students are learning to think like a scientist by asking questions, and then taking one of their questions and asking detailed questions about that topic.
This week we will also begin an engineering activity.

Social Studies - The new Social Studies textbook will be introduced to students this week, and we will learn about communities. Mapwork is also an important part of the social studies curriculum and students work regularly on mapwork skills.

Buddies
As we are entering the fourth week of school and buddy activities are beginning, we want to let you know our plan in order to make our Toddler/Third Grade buddy program more developmentally appropriate and meaningful for all students.  Please follow the hyperlink to see the letter that was emailed to parents Monday, September 14th.  Each third grade class will buddy with a toddler class as opposed to each student individually being assigned a buddy.  Historically, we have seen toddlers struggle to acclimate to this one-on-one partnership which sometimes leads to extra tears and less of an experience for our older students. We are confident that both toddler and third grade students will establish close connections and enjoy meaningful activities together.  Thank you for your understanding and support as we strive to make sure our program is developmentally appropriate for the youngest members of our community and at the same time retain the integrity of our Buddy Program.

Field Trip: Our first field trip of the year is to Mahaffie Farm in Olathe on October 7. More on this later!

Scholastic orders should be placed by the end of the school day on Monday.
