Class News:
Reading and Social Studies:
Students are fully immersed into the Lewis and Clark
journey! Each day we are reading a new chapter from our book In
Their Own Words, Lewis and Clark. Students are working on comprehension,
vocabulary, and have begun to create their own Lewis and Clark journal of
animals and plant life that the explorers discovered on their way. Students
will begin work on creating their own version of the “peace medal” that was
given to the Native Americans from Lewis and Clark and will also complete a
webquest on Lewis and Clark using the iPads.
Language Arts:
Students are busy writing their personal narratives this
week. They will also learn how to combine sentences. In Grammar we continue
learning the jingles and classifying/diagraming sentences. Students should now
be able to identify the subject, verb, adverbs, adjectives, article adjectives,
complete subject, and complete predicate in addition to knowing the four types
of sentences!
Math:
This week in math students are working on addition with
regrouping with 4-5 digit numbers. Students will practice adding
multiple addends with 5-6 digit sums. Students will be given an
Addition and Subtraction Challenge packet to work on during math and free time
throughout the day. I ask parents to talk with their child about
this packet and encourage them to use any free time they might have on this
challenge work. This packet will be available for parents to see at
Parent Teacher Conferences. This week we are also working on
graphing information from the Lewis and Clark exploration. We will
be looking at Lewis and Clark in numbers and organizing that information into a
data set.
**Next week I will begin working with students every Tuesday
morning from 7:30-8:00 on math skills. This is a refresher, a help
session, a reteaching of concepts they do not understand. This 30
minute time block will be for students that want a little extra help one on
one.
Science:
This week we will finish our Plant Unit with a test on
Wednesday. We are also using an excellent Kids Discover App on plants on the
ipads.
Our next unit is Sound, and we will begin that on Thursday.
Ask your student about the celery growing in the classroom,
and hopefully we will soon have basil too.
