Class News:
Reading and Social Studies:
Students are fully immersed into the Lewis and Clark journey! Each day we are reading a new chapter from our book In Their Own Words, Lewis and Clark. Students are working on comprehension, vocabulary, timeline events, and have begun to create their own Lewis and Clark journal of animals and plant life that the explorers discovered on their way. Students are working on their “peace medals” having learned about the peace medals given to the Native Americans from Lewis and Clark. They will also complete a webquest on Lewis and Clark using the iPads.
Language Arts:
Students will complete their personal narratives this week. They will also learn how to combine sentences. In Grammar we continue learning the jingles and classifying/diagraming sentences. Students should now be able to identify the subject, verb, adverbs, adjectives, article adjectives, complete subject, and complete predicate in addition to knowing the four types of sentences! Students are now able to write their own "guided sentences", labeling them with the correct parts of speech.
This week's spelling words are all from our Lewis and Clark work. Students will have their spelling test on Friday, October 9. We will be working on the meanings of the words in class but there will be no test over the meanings.
Math:
We are using this program so students can be proficient in their basic facts. Right now every third grader is working on addition
and subtraction. Your child will advance to multiplication once they
master addition and subtraction.
We will work on this program at school but your child also
needs to use the program at home two or three times a week. There is an
app in the Apple app store that you can download. Any questions about this

Math:
This week in math we are
finishing up our unit on adding and subtracting of 4-5 digit numbers with regrouping.
Students will have a small quiz over these skills on Friday. Next week we
begin our first unit on multiplication! J
This Tuesday is the first
Tuesday in October. Starting tomorrow, I will begin to offer extra help
on Tuesday mornings from 7:30-8:00 for those who are struggling with our
skills covered in class so far this year. Students can come in early on
Tuesdays and get some one-on-one help that they might need. Please email
me if you have any questions or concerns.
Last week the third graders were introduced to a new
computer math program called Reflexmath with Ms. Beilharz. Your child should have brought
home a letter. This letter has the username and password for
your child. It explains the program and has information for you if you
need support.
Science:
The Plant Unit test on Wednesday went well for the most part. Your student should have shared his/her test score on Friday. The work on the Kids Discover App on plants on the ipads took a little longer than anticipated, so we will begin the Sound Unit this week.
We will continue growing some plants in the classroom as well as taking care of the few pots we have planted.
