Class News:

Reading and Social Studies:

This week students will continue their journey through the Pioneer Days.  Students will focus on the Oregon Trail. Students are reading  If I Traveled West in a Covered Wagon.  This non fiction book tells about life on the Oregon Trail, and students will learn about what pioneers took with them, who went, who was in charge, and hardships on the journey.  Mr. N. provides books from the library about pioneer life.  Third graders will read these books independently, writing down interesting facts as they read. Students will also study an Oregon Trail Timeline, learning how to read it accurately.

Math:

The past 2 weeks in math we have been reviewing the basics of multiplication to build a strong foundation of what multiplication really looks like.  This week in math we are moving on to learning the actual multiplication facts themselves.  Students will work on multiplying by 0, 1, 2, and 5.  Students are very familiar with skip counting by these numbers, now it is time to connect the skip counting to a related multiplication fact.  Because these facts are more familiar to students we are able to cover more facts in a short amount of time.  Next week we will work on multiplying by 10, 3,

 and 4.

Science:
This week we continue with our Sound Unit, making pan pipes, and learning about audiologists, and

echolocation.

Language Arts:

Students will continue learning about  plural nouns as well as common and proper nouns. In grammar we continue learning the jingles and classifying/diagraming sentences. Students should now be able to identify the subject, verb, adverbs, adjectives, article adjectives, complete subject, and complete predicate in addition to knowing the four types of sentences! This week students are learning about the preposition, object of the preposition, and prepositional phrase. Students are now able to write their own "guided sentences", labeling them with the correct parts of speech.
We will begin a writing project writing from the perspective of a child traveling the Oregon Trail.

Wordly Wise:
Students do have a set of Wordly Wise words for this week.  We will continue to study these words  and have the tests on Wednesday.
