Classroom News:
Reading:
This week students will begin reading about the rainforest.  We will start with a group reading activity over the layers of the rainforest.  Students will also begin a reading log of  rainforest books they read independently or with partners.  Much of our reading for the next 6-8 weeks will revolve around the rainforest and the student’s specific animal.

Math:
This week students continue to work on Division.  Students have learned how to illustrate a picture to figure out a division problem and this week they will learn to more strategies: using fact families and making arrays.  Students will also work on Reflex math multiplication and division in class on Wednesday.  I encourage students to use this online program at least 10 minutes each night.  It makes a big difference in student success in daily math lessons here at school.

Language Arts:
This week students will finish their paragraph writing over the African American biographies.  We will also finish lesson 7 in Wordly wise and will take the test over the words and application on Friday.

Grammar: Students will continue to diagram sentences using all that they have learned so far!

Science:
Students will finish studying weather, and we will begin studying different ecosystems in preparation for studing the rainforest.

A brief note about the rainforest unit:
  • This week we are starting the much anticipated rainforest unit.  Third graders will watch a video on Monday about rainforest animals.  We will also have many different resources for children to study to pick an animal.  Please talk with your child about the size of animal your family is willing to make.  There are some rainforest websites on the right hand side of the blog that are good resources.
  • Your child will write down three rainforest animals and Mrs. Thompson and Miss.Stark will assign the animals on Wednesday, January 13.  Your child will find out which animal she/he will study and make on Friday, January 15.
  • Over the 3 day weekend, students and parents need to find and print out child friendly information over their assigned animal.  They will bring this information to class.
  • Your child will work on their Rainforest animal at home.  The animal is due at school on Thursday, February 11 – Friday, February 12.  Please do not bring animals prior to these dates.
  • Rainforest Open House is Tuesday, March 1 11:30-1:00.  There will be more information coming home about this at a later date.
