Class News:

Language Arts, Reading, Social Studies:

Students continue to work on their rainforest animal research paper.  This week we are working on the eating habits of their animal and where they fall in the rainforest food web.  Students will gather their facts, write out their paragraph, and then will type their paragraph in computer lab.  In reading students are engaged in reading independent rainforest resource books.  We will also finish reading “The Great Kapok Tree.”  Mrs. Stark’s class participated in acting out this story for their classmates.  Students were given new Wordly Wise spelling words.  We are on lesson 9 this week and will have the spelling test on Friday, February 19^th.  Students continue their work on illustrating the Layers of the Rainforest project.  When illustrating has finished students will begin writing new information they have learned about each layer.

Math : 

We have begun our unit on telling time.  Students worked last week on reading time to the 5 minute mark.  This week we will focus on elapsed time.  This is a difficult topic for many students.  Please work on this at home.  Students can practice counting time between activities, telling you the “end time” of an activity when given the start time and the length of the activity.  For example, we started dinner at 5:30 and dinner lasted 45 minutes.  What time is it now?  We will work on these types of questions for the rest of the week.

Science :
In science this week students are working on a folder for the Rainforest Open House. This includes illustrating a rainforest food web or three food chains. In addition students will learn about deforestation, and they will write a paragraph about that.

Important Rainforest Dates:

Wednesday, February 10 Rainforest Addresses -  Please send addresses of the people you would like to invite to the Rainforest Open House on Tuesday, March 1.We will be addressing invitations on Thursday & Friday of that week.  It helps if you send the addresses electronically so the students can easily read the addresses.

Thursday & Friday, February 11 & 12 Rainforest Animals due (Please do not send them in early because we don't have space to store them.)

Valentine's Day -  Each student should bring cards either for everyone in her/his class or for everyone in 3rd grade. Please have your students put names on the envelopes to ensure everyone is included. Students can bring a decorated box for Valentines from home or a brown paper grocery bag. We will not have time to make boxes as we are fully occupied with our rainforest studies.

The annual Pancake Breakfast will be held February 9 in the North MPR from 7:00 - 8:30 a.m.  This breakfast, sponsored by the 8th grade, serves as a fundraiser for the school and culminates in a class gift presentation during the graduation ceremony in May.
