Language Arts:

Students continue to work on grammar skills.  We continue our work on skills that will be assessed on the standardized test in April.  Students will work on practice worksheets that test student knowledge of analogies, comprehension, vocabulary, mathematics, writing concepts, and quantitative reasoning. 

This week students will begin working on lesson 12 of Wordly Wise and will test over these words on Friday, April 15.

Students will begin talking about, then writing  a demonstration speech. These demonstrations will happen later in April. Please talk with your student about this speech, because students will be writing this speech, then presenting it and demonstrating whatever skill/craft/art/topic they have chosen. 

Reading:

Miss Stark's class will continue reading “The Whipping Boy.” This book is a Newbery Medal-winner.  This funny story takes readers through the adventures of two boys after they run away from home.  The boys are from different social classes. One is kind and respectful while the other is disobedient and plays naughty tricks.  They do not have much in common and do not get along.  However, once out in the wild they are kidnapped by two scoundrels and must learn to work together to outwit the captors.  Throughout this story, the author reminds the reader of important life lessons. Fairness, respect, trust, heroism, courage, generosity, and kindness are all themes featured in this story. The author also sends a strong message of the importance of getting an education and paying attention in school. Perhaps the main theme of the story, though, is friendship, as the prince and the whipping boy overcome their many differences and discover that they actually like each other as people.

Mrs. Thompson's class will continue reading Roald Dahl's "George's Marvelous Medicine". This is an amusing book about a less than adorable grandma whom George tries to "fix". Students will complete comprehension questions, add to their vocabulary, consider setting, learn about character development and character comparisons, develop understanding of alliteration, and make a comic strip. The themes are relationships, family dynamics, and fixing wrongs.

Math:

This week we are learning all about geometry.  On Monday, we will learn about lines, line segments, points, rays, parallel lines, and intersecting lines.  Tuesday we will talk about the definition for vertex, perpendicular, right angles, acute angles, and obtuse angles.  Wednesday-Friday we will review polygons, equilateral, isoscele, and scalene triangles, and quadrilaterals.  We will also continue to work on test prep for our standardized test next week.

Science:

We will continue learning about planets, and will also do some gardening in the community garden this week.

HAITI:

Please join us for a special Haiti Kick Off Chapel on Thursday, April 7^th in the Second Floor Commons. Chapel begins at 8:20 am. We will share pictures and highlights from our recent trip, and will inspire our kids to get out there and work hard to raise money for Holy Cross School. Fundraising efforts will support the food program for the 2016/17 school year. The teachers at Holy Cross School are so grateful for our support.

Holy Cross is also in need of financial support to purchase the following items:

• School Supplies – Story Books, Textbooks, Student Workbooks, French to Spanish Dictionaries
• Furniture – Several teachers as well as our cooks are without chairs. They need money to purchase the wood and money to pay for the labor to build chairs that will be safe, lasting and durable.
• Money to compensate the cooks for their hard work.

INFORMATION ABOUT HOLY CROSS SCHOOL

• Salaries – range from $40.00 Month to $130.00 Month – 13 total teachers
• Food Program - $2000.00 Per Month (Rice & Beans)
• Textbooks/Supplies - $500.00/Month

The total cost to educate a child at Holy Cross School = $150.00 Per Student/Per Year

·         Kindergarten through 6^th Grade = 371 Students

·         7^th, 8^th and 9^th Grades = 43 Students (We currently do not provide funds to support the middle school, this is a future goal)
