Class News:

Reading - We will finish reading our two books this week.  Our next unit will be Lewis and Clark which we will start on Wednesday.  We are starting a new vocabulary word activity.  Each student was given a pouch in which he/she will keep vocabulary note cards.  We will add some as a whole class but other times students will add their own words.  Students should comprehend the selected words but they won't be expected to spell them.  The intention is to increase and broaden their vocabulary in writing, reading, and speaking.

Math - This week we will begin working on adding and subtracting with carrying and borrowing.  The students will be expected to use their rounding knowledge to estimate sums and differences.  The third graders are improving their basic facts skills.

Science - This week we will observe the four different types of seeds we prepared last week. We are examining them each day for signs of germination. We will compare the time it takes for the different varieties to germinate. In addition we will be keeping a close eye on the vegetables in the garden. If the plants are big enough we will weed around them. Lastly we are concluding our Plant Unit, and there will be a test on Tuesday, September 24. I have prepared a Study Guide for the students. They also have their Science Spirals, and you have access to the textbook online. The test is mostly multiple choice, and there are a couple of one or two sentence answers required.  We will also be reviewing the material in class.


Language - This week we will review the concepts we have learned in grammar while focusing on our personal narrative.  Each student will write a personal narrative about something that happened in his/her life.  We will share these with you at a later time.

Community Learning Event -- Bill Severns, coach and author, has written a compelling book titled, Keepers of the Sandlot, where he provides insight and perspective into what our children truly seek through their participation in team sports. Bill played professional baseball for six years in the Brewers organization, but his true passion came from the twenty-three years he spent coaching youth baseball. Through Bill’s life experiences, he has valuable insights and perspectives to share with our community. On October 1^nd, 2013, Bill will be at St. Paul’s for a community discussion at 6:00 PM in the north wing multi-purpose room.

The school strongly encourages all coaches and parents of children who play sports to attend. There is no charge for this event but please RSVP by contacting Linda van Thullenar at Lvan@speds.org. Copies of Keepers of the Sandlot and the Sandlot Strategy are available for check out from the Early Childhood office.
