Class News:

Reading - We continue to read In Their Own Words: Lewis and Clark.  We are working on vocabulary words and pulling interesting facts out of a non-fiction text. We are learning too about the different encounters Lewis and Clark had with different Native American people. Some were friendly, some hostile. The students have made their versions of Peace Medals. Peace Medals were given to the Native Americans from the explorers. The giving and receiving of these signified that both parties would remain peaceful.

Language Arts- We continue to study nouns and this week we will learn about possessive nouns, singular and plural.

Math – We continue to work on subtraction.  This week our main focus will be subtracting across zeroes.  The most important thing to remember is that you can only borrow from your next door neighbor.  We talked about borrowing sugar to make cookies and how we can only borrow from the next door neighbor.  For example, the ones can only borrow from the tens and the tens from the hundreds.  Only a couple more weeks to work on basic facts.  Everyone should be working on basic subtraction facts right now.  If you have quizzed out then keep working on those packets Ms. Beilharz sends home.  Thanks to everyone who showed up to Morning Math last Thursday.  We had a great time!

Science: SOUND: We are learning how sound travels by experimenting with spoons and string, wooden boards with string attached and pulled taut, plucking the string, then chalking the string and plucking again. We are observing, listening and deducing what is happening. We will also learn how we hear sounds this week.

Field Trip - On Friday, October 18 we will go to Mahaffie Farm in Olathe.  This is a working farm that has numerous activities from the time period of  pioneer days  We will be gone all day long.  Since you already signed a field trip permission slip on file with the school, we will not be sending another one home. Every student will need to bring a lunch that day unless you have already ordered one.

On Wednesday, October 23 we will have our Pioneer Day.  The students will spend the morning doing pioneer activities and then have a pioneer type lunch.  We encourage all students to dress as pioneers.  We don't expect you to buy a new outfit because usually something at home will work. The boys should wear jeans, boots, cowboy hat, and a plain shirt.  The girls can wear a long skirt, apron, bonnet, and a blouse.  Let us know if you have any questions.  The room parents have sent out a Sign Up Genius for bringing food for our picnic and for leading activities.  If you haven’t received it then please contact a room parent.

Spelling
This week we are taking a break from Wordly Wise and having 10 spelling words from Lewis and Clark. The students have copies of the words and the spelling test will be on Friday, October 11.
The words are: expedition, voyage, journal, United States, Mississippi River, Missouri River, buffalo, chief, captain, discovery
