Class News:

Reading: Third graders will finishing reading the biographies of Elijah McCoy, Sojourner Truth, Ruby Bridges, Frederick Douglass.  Each third grader read two biographies and took notes.  Then they used their notes to write a paragraph.

Math: We will begin studying fractions this week.  We will work on naming denominators and numerators as well as being able to name a fraction in a set and as part of a group.

We will also continue to take our multiplication tests on Fridays.  Third graders will take a test each week and hope to improve their scores and time.  The goal is to have each third grader memorize their multiplication facts by the end of the year.

Each week third graders will be encouraged to make flashcards of multiplication facts.  These are either the facts they missed or the facts they find challenging.  Third graders are encouraged to study these cards and other facts throughout the week.  Some suggestions to study are to put flashcards on the refrigerator door, bathroom mirror so they can study while brushing teeth, in the car so they can study to and from school,etc..  The important part is that they study.

Science: Students will finish studying the human body this week concluding with a look at the circulatory system.. Then we will move on to the rainforest.

Rainforest:
  • This week we will begin the much anticipated rainforest unit.  Third graders will watch a video on Monday about  rainforest animals.  We will also have many different resources for children to study to pick an animal.  Please talk with your child about the size of animal your family is willing to make.  There are some rainforest websites on the right hand side of the blog that are good resources.
  • Your child will write down three rainforest animals and Mrs. Thompson and Ms. Beilharz will assign the animals on Thursday.  Your child will find out which animal she/he will study and make on Friday.
  • Over the three day weekend, please find two or three age appropriate resources so your child can begin the research project on Tuesday.  Please print them off and have your child bring them to school.  If you can't print it please let your child's teacher know and send us the websites and we will print it for your child.
  • On Friday we will send home information about the rainforest unit.  We ask that you look over it with your child and both of you sign the information and return it to school next week.  All of the important rainforest dates will be listed for your convenience.
The rainforest is a lot of fun and you will  be amazed how much your child learns during the unit.  Have fun making the animals.
