Class News:

Reading and Social Studies:

This week in reading, students are introduced to a new novel, Sarah, Plain and Tall.   We will begin by reading the first chapter together and working on four new vocabulary words for our vocabulary pouches.  Students will then get into small groups, partnered reading, and independent reading for the remaining chapters.  This week we will also focus on the reading and writing skill of summarizing.  Students will be asked to write and tell about the main points of a chapter or section in a book.  We will work on highlighting the most important information and leaving other details aside.  Students will also work on text to text comparison with the previous book, If I Traveled West in a Covered Wagon and this new novel. In Social Studies, students will be reviewing the map of Oregon, looking at it’s natural resources, animals, and plants.  Students will label landforms, major cities, and bordering states of Oregon on the map.

Math:

This week in math we are continuing our focus on multiplication.  The beginning of the week we will focus on the multiplication facts for 7.  Starting on Thursday students will begin working on a Thanksgiving Challenge Packet.  This packet involves in depth problem solving and questioning, addition, subtraction, and multiplication.  I encourage you to ask students about this packet.  I am confident it will be quite a challenge for the students but will help them understand how adults prep and plan food for a group of people, how many servings are required, how many pounds of turkey per person, per dinner party, how much money per serving, etc. It should be a good activity leading up to this big holiday!

Science:
In our study of the human body students will continue learning about bones, what they are made of, and their names. Students will assemble a paper skeleton.
During science this week students will also have the oportunity to work on another STEM project, making a platform from straws, paper clips and pipecleaners.

Language Arts:

Students will finish writing their Oregon Trail journals, writing as if they are traveling west from the perspective of a child. Students will be introduced to pronouns in grammas and we will continue working on possessive nouns, singular and plural.

Spelling:

We will continue with Wordly Wise Lesson 5 this week and the tests are on Friday, November 20.
