RAINFOREST NEWS:
The rainforest is looking wonderful. Many thanks to our two Cristo Rey students who have assembled the rainforest in the commons. Thank you to you all for making such incredible animals for the rainforest. It is amazing to see them all in their habitat! A huge thank you to the parents who have positioned the animals in the forest. They spent several hours doing that.
The students will learn facts about each others' animals this week, then start giving tours next week to other students in the school. If a student has siblings and/or cousins he/she will have the opportunity to give them a tour.
Invitations to the Open House on Tuesday, March 1 from 11:30-1 have been mailed. We do not mail these to you. We know you will be there!
If anyone is unable to come to the Open House we can schedule tours at other times. Just ask us.

Class News:
Language Arts, Reading, Social Studies:
Students continue to work on their rainforest animal research paper.  This week we are finishing our animal research paper, working on an introduction and conclusion, and a cover page. Students will also be busy typing a works cited page. In reading students are engaged in reading independent rainforest resource books. Students have new rainforest spelling words this week. With all theme spelling words, students study for one week and take the test on Friday.  The new words were printed and put in student back packs today.  Students also have these new words written in their planners.  Students are also finishing last minute work on their Rainforest Layers project.  Students typed informational sentences and have glued these into their layer booklet.  Students are also in the process of finishing up a poetry book about the rainforest and their specific animal.  It is all things rainforest in third grade!

Math :
Students are beginning this week working on telling elapsed time using a number line.  After one lesson on Monday, students have a good grasp of this new skill.  Students will also get a lot of practice telling the time from ending time to beginning time.  Going back in time can be a bit more difficult but with practice, I’m hopeful students will become more fluent. An example would be: If we finished eating dinner at 7:35 and dinner took 28 minutes, what time did we start dinner?  Students worked these problems on a number line and a white board and they did great!

Science :
In science this week students will finish their folders for the Rainforest Open House. This includes illustrating a rainforest food web or three food chains. In addition students will learn about deforestation, and they will write a paragraph about that. We will also review the many products that come from the rainforest.
